Richard Tuttle and the East Asian porcelain of Augustus the Strong

Dialog mit der Schenkung Sammlung Hoffmann

The life-size sculpture „The Baroque and Color #8“ by Richard Tuttle (b. 1941) stands before a window in the east gallery in the Porzellansammlung (Porcelain Collection) in the Zwinger, like a delicate, translucent, monumental vase. In its form and aesthetic effect, the contemporary artwork, a light wooden structure covered in painted Japan paper, creates a connection to the Chinese and Japanese decorative vases that surround it. All are hollow forms of an immense fragility and delicacy that allow associations with the human body.

Tuttle’s work was created in 1986, the result of the artist’s year-long exploration of the magnificent hall of mirrors in the Neue Galerie in Graz, Austria. The artworks that Tuttle developed for the specific spatial situation in Graz reflect his previous exploration of the significance of colour in the Baroque period and its interplay with light and space. The connection to light and splendorous Baroque architecture—much like that of the Zwinger—is thus inscribed in this work. In its original situation as well, the abstract sculpture, by being placed in a niche, was framed by architecture. Thus, more than a dialogue, a “trialogue” arises in the Porzellansammlung between the contemporary Western sculpture, the historical Asian exhibits and the Baroque architecture.

In March 2018, the Hoffmann family donated their extensive collection of contemporary art, comprising some 1,200 works, to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. A goal for the donated works is to have them enter a dialogue with objects from various museums of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, thereby opening up different perspectives and levels of meaning for both the contemporary and the historical exhibits.
